Grading in education is a method of implementing precise measurements of varying levels of achievements in a course.
Grades, depending on the institution, can be assigned as letters (A-F), a range of numbers, or a number out of a possible sum, for example, out of 100. Grades are averaged to produce a Grade Point Average (GPA).
GPA is calculated by using the total number of grade points students earn in a given period, in this case, university. Every nation as well as every institution has a specific grading system.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology uses Weighted Averages Grading System, specifically the Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA).
The Weighted Averages (WA) system uses the scores earned by a student in the assessment process which is marked out of 100%. Each course for each programme is Weighted by credit hours as accepted by the academic management.
With the CWA, each student begins the semester with a CWA of 100.00. As the semester progresses, the student is examined with quizzes, assignments, projects, examinations, etc.
These are all used to ascertain the CWA of the student at the end of the full course, including the class of degree the student will graduate with. In KNUST, examinations take 70.00 and the remaining is split between the assignments, projects, etc.
After the semester ends, lecturers calculate the student’s CWA through the following steps:
Multiply the percentage mark obtained by the course credit to gain the weighted marks.
Add up all the Weighted Marks calculated up until the end of the semester to obtain the Cumulative Weighted Marks.
Sum up all the corresponding course credits to the end of the semester in question to obtain the Cumulative Credits
Divide the Cumulative Weighted Marks by the Cumulative Credits to obtain the Cumulative Weighted Average for the semester in question.
