For more than twenty years, residents living and commuting along the Darkuman Junction to Dansoman Junction stretch have endured what many describe as a persistent environmental and public health crisis. What began as a poorly maintained drainage system around 2005 has now escalated into a major concern affecting sanitation, road safety, and overall quality of life in the area.

The drainage infrastructure, originally intended to channel rainwater and prevent flooding, has deteriorated significantly over the years. Choked gutters, broken channels, and stagnant water have become a common sight, especially during and after rainfall. Instead of serving its purpose, the system now contributes to flooding and creates an unsanitary environment for surrounding communities.

Residents report that the situation has gone beyond inconvenience, posing serious health risks. Stagnant water within the drains has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing cases of Malaria in the area. Additionally, poor sanitation and exposure to contaminated water have heightened fears of outbreaks of Cholera and Diarrhea, particularly among children and vulnerable populations.

Beyond health implications, the failing drainage system is also gradually affecting road infrastructure. Portions of the road along the stretch are reportedly weakening and, in some cases, developing visible divisions and cracks. This not only disrupts traffic flow but also increases the risk of accidents, especially for motorists and pedestrians who use the route daily.

Community members say the issue has persisted for far too long without a sustainable solution. Many express frustration over what they describe as years of neglect, despite the growing severity of the problem. They argue that the situation reflects a broader need for consistent maintenance and timely intervention in urban infrastructure management.

Calls are now intensifying for immediate action from key authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), District Chief Executive (DCE), and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area. Residents are urging these leaders to prioritize the rehabilitation of the drainage system, implement proper waste management measures, and ensure regular maintenance to prevent recurrence.

Local voices emphasize that the cost of inaction continues to rise, not just in terms of infrastructure damage, but also in human health and wellbeing. They warn that if urgent steps are not taken, the situation could escalate into a larger public health emergency.

As pressure mounts, the people of Darkuman and Dansoman remain hopeful that their concerns will finally receive the attention they deserve. For many, restoring the drainage system is not just about infrastructure, it is about protecting lives, preserving dignity, and securing a healthier future for the community.
