Top 6 Most Notorious and Fearless University Halls in Ghana

1) Commonwealth Hall, UG-Legon

A Commonwealth Hall inhabitant is known as a “VANDAL,” which stands for vivacious, affable, neighbourly, dedicated/altruistic, and loyal.

The well-known or infamous “Vandals” have unquestionably established themselves as the S.I. unit for infamy in Ghana.

Undoubtedly the most striking element in any university residence hall, the figure of Hermes—the Greek god of fertility and luck—draped in the hall’s chosen colour of red contributes to the legend of Vandal City.

Again, the Chief Vandal, the spiritual head of the Vandals, holds the most clout on any Ghanaian university campus. Even Ghanaian politicians bow down to Chief Vandal in his presence because of the respect and reverence that his status commands.

One of the hall’s continuing customs, the “matricort rite of passage” for every freshmen, instils the “Vandalism” spirit in everyone who lives in the Vandal City.

There is no denying that the Old Vandals Association (OVA), which has significant presence in all of Ghana’s regions, stands out among alumni organisations.

The number of Old Vandals involved in political, social, legal, economic, and other pursuits is infinite, with His Lordship Anin-Yeboah, JSC—the Chief Justice of Ghana—as one of their most renowned alumni.

2. University Hall, KNUST.

The history of University Hall, also known by the nickname “Katanga,” is well known and conjures up shivers in the spines of everybody.

The University Hall, the fourth hall to open at the KNUST, was initially primarily intended for postgraduate and mature students.

The hall’s distinctive design gave it an advantage over inhabitants who were younger (in age) and affiliated with other halls.

They were in an universe of their own and were their own lords because of their relative isolation from the other halls of residence. With their “escort” parade to the matriculation grounds, The Fellows have a reputation for upsetting Matriculation Ceremonies for Freshers.

According to reports, katangees are daring and frequently make headlines for some of the nefarious activities that have taken place on the campus of KNUST and in the larger city of Kumasi.

One of these incidents was the violent altercation Katangees had with Kumasi Polytechnic students when the latter came to play basketball, which solidified Katanga’s reputation in everyone’s thoughts.

For days, the radio waves were dominated by the devastation of Kumasi Polytechnic property and the deadly injuries incurred by both sides. Katanga, like Casford before it, has one of the most powerful alumni organisations, with notable members of the Hall holding positions of influence and power. 3.Casley-Hayford(Casford), UCC

Casford has maintained its status as the University of Cape Coast’s most feared hall thanks to its enviable status as the only remaining male residence.

Ironically, The Hall are known as “gentlemen,” despite the fact that few people would consider their behaviour to be even remotely gentlemanly.

The sea of the “Red Army” looming over the battlefield or even when they are “charging” is not an occasion to take lightly, and the Casfordians have numbers on their side. Casford has a strong alumni base that consistently offers assistance to the hall whenever necessary, which adds to its already powerful reputation.

4. Atlantic Hall (ATL)-UCC

UCC’s Atlantic Hall (ATL) , which used to be an all-male residence hall, is known for some of the daredevil activities that rightfully place them on the list of the most notorious dorms. Ironically, ATL has one of the busiest radio stations on college campuses, ATL fm, which effectively lights up the hall.

Even though their hall is mixed, ATL and Casley Hayford (Casford) have a famous rivalry that has led to fatalities anytime their paths have crossed, with each side claiming victory.

At the University of Cape Coast, ATL is portrayed in a terrifying light by their deity Kofi Busumuru and their enduringly popular and energetic “Sacred Choir.”

5. Mensah Sarbah Hall, UG-Legon

The University of Ghana mixed hall makes the list because it is the only mixed hall at the university to contest the Commonwealth Hall’s dominance. Their moniker “VIKINGS” refers to a Danish tribe that was well-known for piracy, bravery, and valour during a bygone era (8th–11th century).

The Mensah Sarbah Hall has taken over the Okponglo suburb close to the University of Ghana and renamed it “Republic of Okponglo,” maybe as a direct response to Commonwealth Hall’s “Vandal City.”

6. Unity Hall (Conti Power)

For years, Unity Hall, often known as “Conti Power,” had to contend with its formidable opponent, University Hall (Katanga).

But in the early to mid-2000s, when Unity Hall took on the Katangees and defeated the sons of “Father John,” the pendulum of superiority shifted in favour of the wine brotherhood.

The epic 2008 annihilation of Katanga in their own backyard is of historic significance to all “Continentals” for the members and associates of the largest hall in West Africa.

The violent encounter that resulted in extensive Katangee property destruction worth hundreds of thousands of Ghana cedis took place on October 11th, 2008.

In the Hall, it is designated as Remembrance Day.
