The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) claims that the refreshment allowance granted to supervisors and invigilators per session may only be increased if the government absorbs the candidates’ examination registration cost.

In its latest 2021 WASSCE monitoring report, the education think group Africa Education Watch recommended that the Council enhance the rates paid to supervisors and invigilators for their invigilation.

When fees for supervisors and invigilators are increased and paid on time, according to rules, they will not jeopardize examination invigilation.

“At present, WAEC pays external supervisors an amount of GHC 25 per session with invigilators earning GHC 14. This paltry amount, which is not even enough to cover transportation costs for many supervisors and invigilators,” it said.

The Education Think Tank stated that the current GHC25.00 per session for an external supervisor and GHC14.00 for
invigilators, which even ends up arriving close to a year after the conduct of a paper, is a complete demotivator.

“To motivate supervisors and invigilators, WAEC must increase their fees and ensure prompt payment of the same. The current GHC 25 per session for an external supervisor and GHC 14 for invigilators is a demotivator,”

EduWatch in the WASSCE report said some external supervisors during the administration of the international examination were compromised thus the need for WAEC to introduce CCTV cameras at various examination centres.

But, the Management of the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) has said the budget presently operated by the Examinations Council only provides refreshment allowance per session for supervisors and invigilators.

The spokeswoman for the WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye Cudjoe at a press briefing on Friday said any additional allowance introduced would have to be factored into the budget leading to an increase in the fees paid by candidates.

“The budget operated by WAEC only provides allowance per session for supervisors and Invigilators. Any additional allowance introduced would have to be factored into the budget leading to an increase in the fees paid by candidates.”
