SPEECH DELIVERED FOR THE COMMISSIONING OF THECA-TyVEGHA BUILDING BY THE GENERAL MANAGER OF AGOGO PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL.

For us here at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, today marks another significant milestone in our relationship with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Our relationship can be described with the illustration of a “Siamese twins” as both institutions are inextricably linked to one another at least in the areas of research and community service.
The Agogo Presbyterian Hospital is a 350-bed capacity facility sited within the Ashanti-Akim North Municipality with a Population of over 81, ooo. Since its establishment 90 years ago, the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, although in a rural setting, has enjoyed patronage from across the entire country and sometimes even patients from neighboring countries.
However, in the last quarter of a century, there has been significant investment from scientists and researchers from the KNUST who have continuously invested human, material, equipment, financial and other resources to give this institution a referral status in addition to our own efforts from the presbytery.
The two entities; KNUST and Agogo Presbyterian Hospital have over the years successfully collaborated on several projects. Significant among them are clinical trials conducted for vaccines in the management of Malaria and Typhoid fever. The works by Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR), School of Public Health and the School of Medicine and Dentistry are noteworthy.
As we are aware, Typhoid disease continues to be a major threat to the health of many populations living in low and middle-income countries and Ghana is no exception. This State-of-the art facility which is being commissioned today will generate data and compliment evidence for the management of typhoid fever and related diseases. In the future, it is envisaged that scientists from KNUST and health personnel working in close collaboration will facilitate additional trials that may include Covid-19 vaccines.
In this vein, as management of this hospital, we would like to assure you of our continuous collaboration including shared resources that would allow us to be able to find lasting solutions to the many diseases that affect our populations for the betterment of our communities and our country Ghana.
I would conclude by acknowledging the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson and management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, herein represented, as well as the leadership of the Typhoid vaccine trial led by Dr. Florian Marks and Prof. Ellis Owusu-Dabo for their vision and continuous inspiration. Let me also thank Nananom for the provision of land that has enabled the building of this facility.
