A former Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, has raised serious concerns over reports that some candidates sitting for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are being asked to pay large sums of money to cater for invigilators and supervisors.

According to her, certain examination centres are allegedly charging candidates as much as GH¢2,500 to provide meals for officials overseeing the exams. She noted that in other schools, students are reportedly being asked to contribute between GH¢1,500 and GH¢2,000 for similar purposes.

Morrison described the situation as troubling, stressing that such financial demands place an unfair burden on students and their families. She warned that the practice could compromise the fairness and credibility of the examination process, as it creates inequality among candidates.

The former legislator, who also served as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other relevant authorities to urgently investigate the matter. She emphasized the need for examinations to be conducted transparently and ethically, without imposing extra costs on students.

Her comments have sparked renewed discussions about the integrity of the BECE system and the need for stricter oversight to prevent exploitation within examination centres.
