UMaT Matriculates 4,592 Students at 24th Matriculation Ceremony

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has officially inducted 4,592 students into its academic community during its 24th Matriculation Ceremony, marking an important milestone for the institution.

The ceremony took place in two sessions. The first was held on 14th February 2026 at the Tarkwa Campus, while the second session was organized on 21st February 2026 at the School of Railways and Infrastructure Development (SRID) in Essikado. The event formally welcomed the newly admitted students and signified the beginning of their academic journey at the University.

In his matriculation address, the Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah, revealed that the University received 21,489 applications for the 2025/2026 academic year. Out of these applications, 4,482 candidates were offered admission into various undergraduate programmes.

According to the Vice Chancellor, 3,462 students were admitted to the Tarkwa Campus, 980 students to SRID, and 40 students to the Bibiani Study Centre. He also highlighted that 34 percent of the newly admitted undergraduate students are female, reflecting the University’s continuous efforts to promote female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Professor Amankwah further noted that several senior high schools recorded a high number of admitted students. Among them were Ghana Secondary Technical School, St. John’s Senior High School, and Osei Tutu Senior High School.

He also provided information on postgraduate admissions, stating that 110 students were admitted during the January 2026 postgraduate intake. This brings the total postgraduate student population to 1,513, contributing to an overall student population of 17,662 at UMaT. He explained that this growth demonstrates the University’s commitment to expanding opportunities in STEM education both within Ghana and internationally.

Speaking to the newly admitted students, the Vice Chancellor encouraged them to remain focused and committed to their studies. He reminded them to take advantage of several scholarship opportunities available to support their academic pursuits. These include the Ghana Chamber of Mines Tertiary Education Fund (GCM-TEF), the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Scholarship, the Minerals Income Investment Fund Scholarship for Women in Mining Communities (WoMCom), and the Intertek Minerals Scholarship for students studying Minerals Engineering. He added that international students would also benefit from bursaries to assist them during their studies.

Professor Amankwah also introduced the UMaT Incubation Hub, an initiative aimed at supporting student innovation and entrepreneurship. He explained that the hub provides mentorship, technical assistance, and institutional support to help students transform their creative ideas into practical and sustainable ventures that can benefit society.

The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana and several industry partners whose support has contributed to the development and growth of the University. He specifically acknowledged the Ghana Chamber of Mines, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Limited, Gold Fields Ghana, Newmont Ghana Corporation, TotalEnergies, Engineers & Planners, Justmoh Construction Limited, and the Minerals Commission for their continued partnership with UMaT.

In concluding his address, Professor Amankwah urged the matriculating students to make responsible use of their academic freedom and to uphold the University’s core values of Knowledge, Truth, Excellence, Accountability, Integrity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Diversity.

During the ceremony, the Registrar, Dr Theophilus Andoh-Robertson, administered the matriculation oath to the students. The event was attended by the Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Mrs Grace Ofori-Sarpong Akuffo, as well as other principal officers of the University, including the Dean of Students, Deans of Faculties and Schools, Heads of Departments, and Members of Convocation.

The matriculation ceremony officially inducts the students into the University community and symbolizes their commitment to abide by the rules and traditions of UMaT while pursuing academic excellence.
