Education Minister Calls for Emergency Meeting with VC over Unaccredited Programmes ; The running of several unaccredited programmes since 2021 has prompted the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, to seek an urgent meeting with the Vice-Chancellors of the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology (KNUST).
The sector minister requested the urgent meeting in order to address the operation of several unaccredited programmes at the tertiary education levels. According to sources, the summit is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 2, 2022.
In 2021, more than 600 academic programmes at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana were not recognised. The schools’ accreditation “expired or required re-accreditation during the time under evaluation,” according to the Auditor General report for 2021.
According to the report, 374 of the University of Ghana’s academic programmes are not authorised. Additionally, KNUST’s 299 programmes were not accredited. The 374 courses offered by the University of Ghana that were not recognised included 14 diploma programmes, 80 undergraduate courses, 213 post-graduate courses, and 67 doctoral courses.

Only 61 of the 360 programmes offered by KNUST were accredited; the remaining 109 programmes are still awaiting certification from the National Accreditation Board (NAB), which received 190 programmes for initial and re-accreditation. The management of the institutions was advised by the Auditor-General to “expedite steps for accreditation and re-accreditation of all new and expired academic programmes.”
