How clean are you, and what are your expectations for cleanliness from your roommate? Put your cards on the table and see if you can reach a reasonable agreement on your expectations.

Social life

Examine your social life as well as the social life of your potential roommate. Are you the life of the party and enjoy entertaining guests in your dorm room? If that’s the case, you might want to reconsider rooming with people who aren’t keen on socializing.

Schedules

You could want to explore having a roommate with a schedule that is somewhat different from yours so that you can have your privacy or a roommate with a schedule that is somewhat similar to yours so that you can hang out on occasion.

Tips for Living with a Roommate

  1. Check to see if you have any mutual interests or hobbies, and then move from there.
  2. When problems develop, communication is also crucial. Let them know if something is troubling you before it escalates into a larger fight.
  3. Each individual has their own set of personal limits. Discuss whether you are okay sharing items such as food, appliances, and other personal items.
  4. Share responsibilities to ensure that you and your roommate are both contributing to keeping your area clean and organized.
  5. After you’ve moved in with someone new, one of the first things you should do is get to know their schedule.
  6. Accept that your roommate’s behaviors may differ from your own, and attempt to find a middle ground if your differences are causing you to disagree.
  7. Remember that you are sharing a space with another person and that you should consider their sentiments before making decisions!
  8. Even if you and your roommate have similar tastes in music, TV, and movies, it doesn’t imply they want to hear or see whatever you’re viewing or listening to all of the time. Buy a good pair of headphones and use them whenever you listen to music or watch TV.
  9. With roommates, personal space can become a major concern. Allow your roommate a few hours in the room to themselves each week, and they will hopefully reciprocate.
