Prof. Christian Agyare, Provost for College of Health Sciences (CHS) at KNUST has been appointed New Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, which will take effectively 1st August 2026.
Prof. Christian Agyare is one of Ghana’s distinguished pharmaceutical researchers and academic leaders, widely recognized for his contributions to pharmaceutical microbiology, natural products research, and higher education administration.
Currently serving as the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Professor Agyare has built an impressive career spanning teaching, research, institutional leadership, and community service.
Born in Koneyaw in the Asante-Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Professor Agyare is the youngest child of the late Gideon Agyare and Madam Joyce Amoah. He began his early education at the Armed Forces Basic Schools at the 4th Battalion Infantry (4BN), Uaddara Barracks in Kumasi, before continuing to Prempeh College for his secondary education.
He later pursued higher education at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he obtained both his Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) and Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degrees. His academic journey continued in Germany at the University of Münster, where he earned a doctorate degree through a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service.
Following his doctoral studies, Professor Agyare undertook postdoctoral fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco and the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, further strengthening his expertise in pharmaceutical sciences and biomedical research.
Academic and Administrative Leadership
Professor Agyare joined KNUST as a Lecturer in 2003 and steadily rose through the academic ranks, becoming Senior Lecturer in 2011, Associate Professor in 2016, and full Professor in 2020.
Over the years, he has held several important administrative positions within the university, including:
- Head of the Quality Assurance and Planning Office
- Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Non-Professorial Member of the Academic Board
- Deputy Examinations Officer at the Department of Pharmaceutics
- Fellow of Independence Hall, KNUST
He also served as an adjunct Senior Lecturer at Central University between 2012 and 2015.
Research Excellence and Global Recognition
Professor Agyare’s research focuses primarily on:
- Antimicrobial agents from medicinal plants
- Wound healing therapies
- Anti-inflammatory natural products
- Antibiotic resistance in humans and animals
His scholarly output is extensive, with more than 200 publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, books, and book chapters. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students at the PhD, MPhil, and MSc levels.
Through his research activities, he has secured grants exceeding US$11 million from international organizations such as:
- German Research Foundation
- German Academic Exchange Service
- World Intellectual Property Organization
- Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
- Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
Professor Agyare has also gained significant international visibility through platforms such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Academia.edu, where his publications have attracted thousands of citations and readerships.
In 2023, he was ranked among the top researchers in Ghana and at KNUST by the AD Scientific Index.
Awards and Professional Contributions
Professor Agyare has received several recognitions for his academic and research contributions, including:
- Best Researcher at KNUST
- Young African Researcher Award (2016)
- Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing Award by the Journal of Ethnopharmacology
- Recognition in Review Process Award for Pharmaceutical Biology
Beyond academia, he has served on numerous national and international boards, committees, and professional bodies. He became the first elected African member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research.
He has also contributed significantly to Ghana’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors through leadership roles within the:
- Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana
- National Health Insurance Authority
- Pharmacy Council Ghana
Additionally, he serves as an external examiner and assessor for several universities across Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world.
Personal Life and Community Service
Outside academia, Professor Agyare is a devoted Christian and active member of Methodist Church Ghana, worshipping at Bethel Methodist Church in Kwadaso, Kumasi. He serves in various leadership and counseling roles within the church.
He is married to Charlotte Sena Agyare, and together they have three children.
Through decades of teaching, research, mentorship, and institutional leadership, Professor Christian Agyare continues to play a major role in advancing pharmaceutical sciences, healthcare research, and higher education in Ghana and beyond. He has been appointed as the next Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor which will take effectively on 1st August, 2026.
