KNUST SRC Supports Library Upgrade with Chair Donation
Published: 02 April 2026
In a move aimed at improving the academic environment on campus, the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has donated six chairs to the university’s main library to enhance seating conditions for students.
The intervention forms part of the SRC’s broader commitment to supporting infrastructure improvements within the university, particularly in spaces that directly impact student learning. The donation responds to concerns about the deteriorating state of existing furniture in the library, which has compelled some students to rely on temporary and unsuitable seating arrangements.

SRC President Shakir Is-Haq Waiz explained that the initiative was inspired by firsthand observations during a visit to the library. He noted that while interim solutions had been put in place, they fell short of the standards expected of a modern academic facility. Following discussions with library management, the SRC resolved to contribute by providing new chairs to support ongoing upgrades.
According to him, the council mobilised resources and collaborated with key stakeholders to procure the furniture, describing the effort as a practical step toward improving student welfare and enhancing the academic experience on campus.

Receiving the donation, University Librarian Dr. Richard Bruce Lamptey expressed appreciation for the SRC’s support, noting that the library continues to evolve to meet the diverse needs of students. He emphasized the importance of creating flexible and inclusive learning environments that cater to different study preferences.

Dr. Lamptey also outlined several planned improvements within the library, including making the facility more accessible to persons with disabilities and upgrading key sections such as the research commons. He further revealed plans to introduce recreational learning spaces, including areas for board games, as part of efforts to promote a balanced and engaging academic atmosphere.

Highlighting a broader vision, he mentioned the importance of preserving institutional memory through dedicated spaces that document the contributions of past university leaders.

The Director of the Directorate of Student Affairs (DOSA), Prof. Mrs. Marian Asantewah Nkansah, commended the SRC for its initiative, describing it as a thoughtful and impactful contribution. She noted that student leaders had earlier been encouraged to engage widely with university stakeholders to better understand institutional needs and align their policies accordingly.
She emphasised that such collaboration fosters shared responsibility and strengthens support for student-led interventions. While acknowledging that many aspire to undertake large-scale projects, she stressed that smaller, consistent efforts can collectively lead to meaningful change within the university.
Prof. Nkansah also urged students to take proper care of the newly donated chairs to ensure their durability and long-term benefit to the academic community.
The donation underscores the SRC’s role in championing student welfare and contributing to the continuous improvement of learning facilities at KNUST.
