The Junior High School of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has ushered in a new era of student leadership with the swearing-in of Jeanette Naa Shormeh Nortey as Head Prefect for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The ceremony, held on the school campus, marked the official transition of leadership from the outgoing prefects to a newly elected team. Jeanette Nortey, together with her fellow prefects, took the oath of office in a symbolic moment that reaffirmed the school’s commitment to discipline, service, and student representation.
This development follows a student-led electoral process conducted weeks earlier, where pupils voted to select leaders they believe can effectively champion their interests. The exercise reflects the school’s broader mission to instill democratic values and leadership skills at an early stage.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Head Mrs. Theresa Anyimadu highlighted the significance of the occasion within the school’s long-standing tradition. She noted that the prefectship system has played a crucial role in shaping responsible and confident students over the past 25 years. According to her, the Head Prefect position continues to serve as a platform for grooming young leaders, particularly empowering female students who have consistently excelled in the role.
She also expressed appreciation to the outgoing prefects for their commitment and contributions, urging the new leaders to approach their responsibilities with a strong sense of purpose. Emphasizing key values, she encouraged them to demonstrate determination, desire, and discipline in their leadership journey.
In her remarks, Mrs. Nana Oye Woodiez, Deputy Head of the KNUST Basic School, congratulated the newly inducted prefects and reminded them that leadership goes beyond titles. She stressed the importance of humility, fairness, and integrity, calling on the students to let their actions reflect true leadership.
Mrs. Woodiez further observed that many members of the new prefect body had previously served in leadership roles during their primary education, a sign of their proven capabilities. However, she also advocated for increased participation from male students in future leadership structures to promote balance and inclusivity.
With a renewed sense of responsibility, Jeanette Nortey and her team are expected to build on the legacy of their predecessors while fostering unity, discipline, and academic excellence within the school community.
