University Health Services Concludes Patient-Centered Care Training for Staff.
The University Health Services (UHS) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has concluded a four-week training seminar focused on effective patient-centered communication. The initiative was aimed at improving service delivery and enhancing patient experience within the facility.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Bhavana Singh, Chairperson of the Quality Assurance Sub-Committee at UHS, explained that the programme was designed to strengthen communication practices, promote patient safety, and foster compassionate care.
She noted that the training was informed by actionable insights gathered from surveys conducted among both staff and clients. According to her, feedback from these surveys guided the development of targeted interventions and the implementation of the seminar as part of a measurable quality improvement strategy.
Dr. Singh further indicated that the programme forms part of a broader quality assurance agenda, with UHS already preparing its next milestone for 2027 as it pursues sustained excellence in healthcare delivery.
The Director of University Health Services, Nana Kwame Ofori Ayisi-Boateng, urged staff to reflect on their professional conduct and communication practices beyond interactions with patients. He emphasised the importance of effective communication at all levels, including among colleagues and between management and staff.
He also announced plans to prominently display patients’ rights and responsibilities, as well as those of staff, at various locations within the facility and across UHS digital platforms to promote mutual respect and accountability.
A Medical Officer, Irene Ohene Manu, outlined strategies to sustain the gains made during the training. She revealed that the quality assurance team has developed visual reinforcements to highlight key messages within the hospital environment and encouraged participants to serve as role models in their respective units.
Dr. Manu added that additional training sessions, including virtual engagements, will be organised throughout the year to extend the benefits of the programme to more staff and management members. She stressed that embedding patient-centered care into the institutional culture requires collective responsibility.
The seminar underscores UHS’s commitment to continuous improvement and its resolve to deliver high-quality, patient-focused healthcare services to the University community.
