Transition Committee on UGMC Submits Report to President Mahama
The Transition Committee overseeing the transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) from the Ministry of Health to the University of Ghana has officially presented its findings to President John Dramani Mahama.The nine-member committee, co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson, former Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana, and Professor Mutawakilu Ibin Idrisu, a neurological specialist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, was established on June 8, 2025.The committee’s mandate focused on aligning UGMC’s clinical operations with the University of Ghana’s academic and research goals.
Key responsibilities included conducting legal and operational reviews, developing integration guidelines, creating a detailed roadmap with timelines, establishing a transition secretariat, and addressing funding and staffing issues.During the presentation at the Presidency in Accra yesterday, Professor Lawson highlighted that the committee had thoroughly assessed UGMC’s operations, proposed guidelines for integration, identified potential challenges along with practical solutions, and outlined a comprehensive implementation plan.President Mahama received the report, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition that strengthens both healthcare delivery and academic excellence at UGMC.
