UniMAC Wins, KNUST Takes First Runner-Up at the 2026 Commonwealth Debate Championship held at the Parliament House of Ghana, Accra.

The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has emerged as the Winner of the 2026 Commonwealth Debate Championship, while the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi secured the First Runner-Up position at the competition held at the Parliament House of Ghana in Accra to mark Commonwealth Day. A cheque of GHS 8,000 was presented to KNUST team.
CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM KNUST
The championship brought together top university debaters from across the country to deliberate on the motion: “Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy in the Commonwealth translates into actual economic opportunities for its university graduates.”
Representing UniMAC, the winning team, were Titus Owusu Darko and Agurobesa, whose arguments and delivery impressed the adjudicators.
The KNUST team, which placed first runner-up, was represented by Nana Agyei-Gyebi and Mubarak Danaa, who also delivered a strong performance throughout the competition.
A total of 20 tertiary institutions initially participated in the debate, with six universities advancing to the final stage.
The final rankings were:
1st Place: University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC)
2nd Place (1st Runner-Up): Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
3rd Place: Central University
4th Place: University for Development Studies (UDS)
5th Place: University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Wa
6th Place: University of Ghana, Legon
The event formed part of activities celebrating Commonwealth Day and aimed to promote critical thinking, public discourse, and civic engagement among Ghanaian university students while highlighting the role of democracy in creating economic opportunities for graduates.
