UEW PLC Team Hands Over ESD Research Manuals to Agona West Education Directorate.
A delegation from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), under its Professional Learning Communities (PLC) programme, has paid a working visit to the Agona West Municipal Directorate of Education to officially present key research documents aimed at strengthening sustainability education at the basic school level.

The team, led by Professor Ruby Hanson, formally handed over the Teacher’s Manual and Facilitators Manual developed under the PLC research initiative to the Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Bismark Mfaafo Offei. Also present at the meeting was Mr. Samuel Kwesi Mensah, Deputy Director in charge of School Supervision and Monitoring.
The PLC programme seeks to enhance the capacity of Junior High School (JHS) teachers to effectively integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into General Science and Social Studies lessons. The initiative is expected to empower teachers with innovative pedagogical strategies and collaborative learning approaches that promote sustainability awareness among learners.
The programme forms part of the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA) Project, a broader effort aimed at improving teacher professional development across the continent. In the Agona West Municipality, the project involves eight selected teachers from participating schools who are actively engaged in the PLC activities.
The initiative is being implemented through a strong international partnership involving UEW, Saide, University College London (UCL), and Botswana Open University. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving teaching quality and promoting sustainable development education in African schools.
Members of the UEW delegation included Dr. B. B. B. Bingab, Dr. Bawa Mbage, Dr. Boniface Yaayin, and Mr. Gideon Atakorah, alongside Prof. Hanson.
The visit highlights UEW’s ongoing dedication to advancing teacher education, strengthening institutional partnerships, and supporting educational reforms that align with global sustainability goals.
