Thousands Mourn KNUST Student Joana Yabani at Emotional Funeral Service
A somber atmosphere enveloped the Jehovah Shammah Assemblies of God Church in Ashongman Estates, Accra, on Saturday, April 5, as thousands gathered to bid a final farewell to Joana Deladem Yabani, a promising Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student whose life was tragically cut short.
Tributes and Condolences
Family, friends, schoolmates, church members, and dignitaries flooded the church premises to pay their respects to Joana, whose sudden and tragic death on February 27, 2025, sent shockwaves through the nation. Representatives from the KNUST student body and the Achimota Old Students Association were among those in attendance, alongside leaders from various Assemblies of God branches, clergy, and security officials, including the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Teye Cudjoe.
Launch of JDAY Foundation
During the service, the JDAY Foundation was launched in Joana’s honor, with the aim of raising awareness and combating gender-based violence and tragic relationship-related crimes. The foundation seeks to ensure that Joana’s story sparks lasting change and safeguards others from similar fates.
Aftermath and Trial
Joana’s boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, is currently standing trial in connection with her death, which remains shrouded in unanswered questions. A thanksgiving service is scheduled for April 13 at the same church to celebrate Joana’s life and legacy.
