KNUST Suspends Student Activities Following Violent Clash, Announces Tough Security Measures.
The Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has expressed grave concern over a violent clash involving some groups of students that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026.
In a press release dated February 10, 2026, the university disclosed that the incident happened around 2:00 a.m. and resulted in injuries to one student, who is currently receiving medical treatment at the University Hospital. Management noted that the injured student is responding positively to treatment and extended wishes for a speedy recovery.
In response to the seriousness of the incident and in line with its commitment to safeguarding lives and property on campus, KNUST Management announced a series of decisive measures with immediate effect.
The university has commenced investigations to identify all individuals involved in the clash, with assurances that appropriate sanctions will be applied in accordance with university regulations and due process. As part of efforts to restore calm, all public gatherings and student programmes have been suspended until further notice, with the exception of officially approved religious, medical, or humanitarian activities.
Management further revealed that the university is collaborating closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to arrest and prosecute students and any other persons found to have disturbed the peace on campus. Additionally, in line with directives from the University Council, the names and photographs of students who have been dismissed, rusticated, or suspended due to disciplinary breaches will continue to be published across media platforms to serve as a deterrent to others.
The university reassured students, staff, parents, alumni, and the general public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining safety, security, and the well-being of all members of the KNUST community. Management emphasized that every necessary step will be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and to ensure peace and order on campus.
KNUST indicated that further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.
