KNUST SRC Unveils Over GHC 1.04 Million Budget for 2025/2026 Academic Year

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), under the leadership of SRC President, H.E. Shakir Is-Haq Waiz, has unveiled an estimated budget exceeding GHC 1,044,424.00 for the 2025/2026 academic year. The budget outlines strategic allocations aimed at improving student welfare, supporting academic initiatives, and enhancing campus life.

Key Welfare and Support Allocations

A significant portion of the budget focuses on student welfare. An amount of GHC 50,000 has been allocated to the Students’ Welfare Support Fund to assist students facing financial challenges. Additionally, GHC 20,000 has been earmarked for the establishment of a Hygiene Essentials Bank, alongside the distribution of  1,000 sanitary pads to each college  to promote menstrual health and hygiene.

Support for inclusivity is also evident, with  GHC 15,000  allocated to students with disabilities. Furthermore,  GHC 19,850  has been dedicated to organizing the  Final Year Summit, aimed at preparing graduating students for life after university.

Programs and Institutional Initiatives

The Welfare Commission  and the WOCOM has been allocated  GHC 41,423.00  to implement four flagship programs:

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign – GHC 8,345.00

WOCOM Fees Support – GHC 12,500.00

WOCOM Connect – GHC 13,108.00

Anti-Sexual Harassment & Mental Health Campaign – GHC 7,470.00

The Office of the Financial Secretary will receive  GHC 23,278.00  to execute two major initiatives:

Making Every Cedi Count 2.0 (Financial Training Workshop) – GHC 9,264.00

FLECS Summit 3.0 – GHC 14,014.00

Similarly, the Office of the General Secretary has been allocated  GHC 35,900.00  to oversee:

Secretary Connect Program – GHC 13,700.00

Final Year Summit – GHC 19,850.00

KNUST Arts Festival – GHC 2,350.00 (with additional sponsor support)

Parliamentary Council and Student Support Projects

 

The SRC Parliamentary Council has been allocated a substantial  GHC 246,000.00  to support various student-centered initiatives throughout the academic year. These include:

College Projects – GHC 36,000

  JCR & Hall Support – GHC 35,000

  Non-Residential Student Welfare & Security – GHC 30,000

  International Students’ Association Support – GHC 30,000

  Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) Support – GHC 15,000

  Obuasi Campus Student Support – GHC 30,000

 Parliamentary Operations & Movement – GHC 70,000

Security, Health, and Student Engagement

KNUST Cadet Corps

The KNUST Cadet Corps and Health Committee has been allocated  GHC 19,144.00 , covering. Here is the breakdown:

Cadet Corps Training & Security Support – GHC 10,000.00

Sexual Health Awareness Program – GHC 9,144.00

In addition,  GHC 100,000.00  has been allocated for the  Students’ Week Celebration , which will be managed by a committee under the University Council. The committee is expected to determine and execute the schedule of activities for the event.

SONSOL Project Expansion

KNUST SONSOL PROJECT

One of the standout highlights of the budget is the  SONSOL Project , which has received  GHC 135,000.00 , more than double last year’s allocation of GHC 60,000.00. The increased funding will be used to procure  45 laptops , each valued at  GHC 3,000.00 , to support students in need of digital resources.

Governance and Parliamentary Developments

In a related development, the SRC Parliamentary Council reportedly summoned the SRC President before its Privileges Committee over the display of appointees not approved by the Appointments Committee. However, the committee clarified that it lacks the authority to summon the SRC President, as its powers apply only to parliamentarians under the Standing Orders.
