KNUST Disassociates Itself from False Media Reports on Student’s Death
The Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has strongly refuted circulating media reports suggesting that the late student, Mr. Ransford Amankwah Asomani, was under the influence of marijuana prior to his death.
In a press release dated February 10, 2026, the University said it has taken notice of publications circulating on social media and some media platforms, particularly reports attributed to GH One TV, which alleged that KNUST had confirmed the student was smoking marijuana before falling from a hostel balcony.
Management stated unequivocally that the University has not issued any statement or confirmation supporting such claims. According to the release, KNUST has made no pronouncement regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident beyond an earlier holding statement issued to the public.
The University emphasized that investigations into the incident are still ongoing, and as such, no conclusions have been reached at this stage.
“KNUST therefore disassociates itself from the said publication and urges the media and the public to disregard the report, as it does not emanate from the University and remains unverified,” the statement noted.
Management further called on media organizations to exercise professionalism, ethical responsibility, and restraint, especially when reporting on sensitive matters involving the loss of life, pending the outcome of official investigations.
The University reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and assured the public that accurate and verified information will be communicated once investigations are concluded.
The statement was signed by Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, University Relations Officer, for the Registrar.
