Ecobank Ghana Delivers Final Batch of Laptops to University of Ghana Initiative

Ecobank Ghana has successfully fulfilled its three-year pledge to support the University of Ghana under the “One Student, One Laptop” initiative, marking a significant milestone in advancing digital access in higher education.

The bank recently presented the final batch of 100 brand-new laptops to the University, bringing its total contribution to 300 devices over the past three years. This follows earlier donations made in April 2023 and May 2024, each consisting of 100 laptops.

The initiative, spearheaded by Vice-Chancellor, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, is designed to support academically talented but financially constrained students by equipping them with essential digital tools. The program aims to enhance learning outcomes and prepare students for a technology-driven global landscape.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Abena Osei-Opoku, underscored the critical role of technology in modern education. She noted that access to digital tools is no longer optional but a necessity for student success, reaffirming the bank’s commitment to youth empowerment and educational development.

In response, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed appreciation for the bank’s continued partnership, highlighting the importance of digital readiness in the post-pandemic era. She emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic revealed significant gaps in digital access, making initiatives like this essential for uninterrupted academic progress.

Chair of the implementation committee, Prof. Peter Quartey, revealed that Ecobank’s contribution accounts for approximately 30% of all laptops distributed under the initiative so far. Prior to this latest donation, the University had received 996 laptops, with 625 students already benefiting.

Beyond device donations, Ecobank Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the University’s technological infrastructure, including upgrades to computer laboratories to facilitate computer-based examinations and research.

This collaboration highlights a broader vision of transforming education through innovation, ensuring that students are well-equipped to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
